For a long time, I had the subconscious belief that a person absolutely needs eight hours of sleep in order to be healthy. I don't know exactly where this idea came from, but I know now that this is a rather misleading thought. For me, these eight hours became the goal, the “nonplus ultra” or rather the bare minimum that had to be achieved. Almost like a reward for the effort invested in falling asleep.

I took this attitude as an opportunity to explore my personal relationship with falling asleep on canvas in an unbiased and playful way before I started my diploma project. The work is titled “The Quest for 8 Hours.”
It shows a figure in pajamas reaching headlessly for eight coins. On the one hand, these coins represent the eight hours of sleep that must be achieved (in my head), but at the same time they are reminiscent of tokens or coins from video games that must be collected. This emphasizes the reward character: you need all eight to complete the “sleep level.”

I used acrylic paint on a 1.30 m by 1.60 m canvas on a stretcher frame. The work forms the starting point for my thesis. It is partly revisited, questioned, and further developed in new contexts.
